  • An ink stone is used for the preparation of liquid ink, by rubbing the ink block on it with some water ( suzuri)

  • The stone has the longest life and is also the most difficult  to choose

  • An ink stone of good quality is usually black with hues of red, violet or green

  • Has a hollow part  which is called the “sea” which holds the ink

  • A flat surface to grind the sumi stick is called the “hill”

  • The quality of the stone determines the shades that can be made on the paper
